Before teaching your dog how to lie down, you should train him first how to sit. Teaching him how to sit will make the training much easier and faster. There are two ways you can teach a dog how to lie down. The first one is without the use of your leg or chair, and the other one is using the latter.
1st: Call his attention by calling his name.
2nd: Have your dog sit. He should be in a sitting position.
3rd: Put your hand right below the dog’s chin. You should the be holding a snack so he will be intereseted in following it.
4th: Slowly lower your hands to the floor and slowly withdraw it back to you. he should then be following your hand.
If it doesn’t work, then we will go to the second method using a chair or your leg. Simply follow the steps 1 to 4, but this time let the dog follow your hands under a chair or below your legs. With this, the dog will be forced to lower his body down.
When he started to lower is body down, say “lie” or “lie down” and give him a reward, so he will know what he did was correct. Make sure to make every session fun and enjoyable for the both of you so that the dog will never feel scared of trying again. As an owner, you will need patience, as training your dog will surely entail a lot of it.
